After two games, Miami and Chicago are tied. Last night, D Rose made an appearance sporting a light weight, V neck sweater, emblazoned with a rugby patch. Hard to tell, but it looks like he’s wearing a polo beneath it. An interesting combination showing laid back prep, a common theme throughout the post game interviews.

We have yet to see the two most stylish ballers in the league, though, Lebron and Wade. They’ve been sporting cardigans from the previous rounds and might show more of the same. Lebron loves that spread collar.

The most interesting press conference appearance is always by Kevin Durant. You can count on him to button his top button wearing a clean cut polo or dress shirt while strapped with his backpack. He doesn’t follow trends but function. He’s wearing a mini gingham checked shirt below with sleeve holders in place. Seems like he’s about to chase the team bus afterwards.

Most importantly, though, what’s in the bag Kevin?

Click here to view the embedded video.

And last but not least, after dropping 48 points in one of the greatest shooting playoff performances of all time, the Dirk threw on his dress shirt and was still wiping the sweat from his forehead. Trimmed beard, uncombed hair, nondescript dress shirt, we don’t think he cares too much on what he wears but only on how he performs. A hard night’s work indeed.

With our hometown Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals verse the Heat, we’d be remiss not to take notice. There’s plenty covering Derrick Rose’s on court, breathtaking skill set, but not enough mention regarding his still developing sense of style. He might be 22, but we know he’s a fast learner.

And to be fair, we should also recognize the competition. So during the rest of the playoffs, we’ll provide a few comments and photos of what our favorite ballers are wearing after the game. This might give us some guidance on what to wear after work as well.

To get us started, we’ll remark on Rose’s MVP acceptance speech outfit. It’s not formal, but balances casual and dressy. He’s wearing a suit jacket but the pants aren’t matching. The understated, navy jacket with patterned squares are off set with a navy pinstriped dress shirt. This is a good rule to follow when matching patterns. The pocket square is artfully disheveled, discreetly making an appearance. And the simple, navy colored tie anchors the outfit perfectly. A true MVP performance on and off the court. Click on the image for details.

And if you missed the speech, bring a box of tissues and see it here.

When pairing a tie with a dress shirt, most of the time we hardly give consideration to the collar. We think color and shape, match as appropriate and then we’re on our way, ready to save the day. But not so fast. Different collars offer different spreads and a tie’s knot can help define your appearance, giving the right impression. It could be for a job interview, a wedding or just another day at the office, but it never hurts to give a good impression.

There are three basic tie knots which can be learned here. The Full Windsor Knot has the largest knot, followed by the Half Windsor and then the Four In Hand.

Whenever you have a spread or wide collar with your dress shirt, it’s best to use a larger knot to fill the space in between, such as a Full Windsor or Half Windsor Knot. If you’re feeling bold, go for the Double Windsor. One note about spread collars, is it looks best with those who have narrow or slim shaped faces. Here’s Lebron sporting a wide collar and a Full Windsor.

A Half Windsor Knot is slightly smaller than the Full Windsor and easier to tie. Since it’s not too bold but not tiny, it’s a safe and common selection among most men. It looks best between a moderate spread collar or slightly pointy, depending on your preference.

The Four In Hand works best with a point or short collar with your dress shirt. The point collar doesn’t leave much room in the middle for anything other than a Four In Hand. If you try a large knot, it looks crowded, somewhat forced. The short collar, with its brief tips, matches well with the Four In Hand’s smaller knot, along with a short, spread collar. Going with a Four In Hand and just a spread collar looks wimpy. You won’t strike fear in your opponents.

Variations of the three basic knots are common, adding your own personal style and taste. A trendy style is leaving the knot loose but that look is dictated by the situation, like winding down a night at 4am or a casual get together. Or maybe you just don’t give a damn, just like Clive.

Regardless, matching the collar with the right knot isn’t very hard and worth the extra step to make you look that much better. If you’re going to put in the time to wear a dress shirt, tie and suit, take the extra few minutes to complete the look. Leave laziness to others.

The baseball playoffs have started, football is entering its 6th week, hockey had its opener and basketball is about to begin. So if you need a sports fix, there’s plenty of good options right now. This past Sunday I was watching the Patriots and Broncos stage an epic battle relaxing on the sofa, pizza in one hand, beer in another. I was distracted, however, by the grotesque uniforms adorned by the Broncos. Just brutal.

If players could choose their own uniforms, I’m sure they could come up with some good ideas. Well, that time hasn’t come yet but some of them sure know how to dress. So we’ll take a tour of some of the best dressed athletes and see what we can learn from them. Drum roll please.

First up is Tom Brady. He’s dressed casually but this looks good, timely fashion for fall. Most importantly, he looks comfortable.

After a night out keeping up with Gisele, it’s time to relax in a sharp dressed suit.

Next we have Dwayne Wade, my favorite baller on the court but lookn sharp here. This look takes confidence.

And he can balance a casual look as well, still making a nice statement.

Terrell Owens is always a distraction on the field, but he knows how to keep it together off the field.

David Beckham has probably had some help from “Posh Spice” but he brings a personal style mixed with fashion.

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo styles himself in a pink polo and the bold belt buckle on snakeskin is fearless.

Lebron James is probably the best dressed athlete I think. He combines great formal style with a fun look as well. Here’s to the king.

Finally, I wanted to give some old school recognition to former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry. Not sure if you’re familiar with what coaches wear these days, but they can learn from an icon.
