We’d like to say thanks to the talented creators for helping us look good. It’s not easy to know where the best deal is, the best look or best trend to ignore or follow, without their help.

Here’s a round up of the sites we like and hope you do too.

Valet Mag offers up everything for the modern man. Great tips on style and living, plus they have a nice question/answer section.

The GQ Eye is the men’s magazine blog, posting frequently on men’s topics and trends. A daily snapshot from the experts.

Get Kempt also posts frequently but their topics are less mainstream and they have fun doing it.

Magnificent Bastard keeps it simple. You ask a question on style and they answer it, with fearless wit and sharp satire.

Sartorially Inclined’s a blog with leanings towards prep. We’re not sure how he posts so frequently with such good content. Also, shoot him a question and he won’t blow you off.

Put This On is a two man operation recommending a modern look with old school fundamentals. Also, they have great insight on good deals.

One Man’s Style is for those that want something with a visual impression. Four photos per post, each represent his sense of style, wants and desires.

There are three basic tie knots which can be learned here. The Full Windsor Knot has the largest knot, followed by the Half Windsor and then the Four In Hand.

Whenever you have a spread or wide collar with your dress shirt, it’s best to use a larger knot to fill the space in between, such as a Full Windsor or Half Windsor Knot. If you’re feeling bold, go for the Double Windsor. One note about spread collars, is it looks best with those who have narrow or slim shaped faces. Here’s Lebron sporting a wide collar and a Full Windsor.

A Half Windsor Knot is slightly smaller than the Full Windsor and easier to tie. Since it’s not too bold but not tiny, it’s a safe and common selection among most men. It looks best between a moderate spread collar or slightly pointy, depending on your preference.

The Four In Hand works best with a point or short collar with your dress shirt. The point collar doesn’t leave much room in the middle for anything other than a Four In Hand. If you try a large knot, it looks crowded, somewhat forced. The short collar, with its brief tips, matches well with the Four In Hand’s smaller knot, along with a short, spread collar. Going with a Four In Hand and just a spread collar looks wimpy. You won’t strike fear in your opponents.

Variations of the three basic knots are common, adding your own personal style and taste. A trendy style is leaving the knot loose but that look is dictated by the situation, like winding down a night at 4am or a casual get together. Or maybe you just don’t give a damn, just like Clive.

Regardless, matching the collar with the right knot isn’t very hard and worth the extra step to make you look that much better. If you’re going to put in the time to wear a dress shirt, tie and suit, take the extra few minutes to complete the look. Leave laziness to others.

A man should have at least one white dress shirt in his closet. It will become a staple for his wardrobe, much like a pair of jeans. This is because it matches any color suit, in any season, at any event. Matching a suit and tie to a white shirt is a breeze, saving time and money. Sometimes, we just have more pressing concerns. Also, you can be bold with the tie since it’s now the centerpiece, the white contrast of your dress shirt serving as a blank canvas. If you’re not wearing a suit, you can wear a white dress shirt with just about anything. It goes well with a pair of jeans and a blazer. Maybe with chino’s for a friend’s summer party or at your favorite bar. Or at the White House.

Also, if you want to avoid the sheer, see through look and not wear a white undershirt, then look for something with a stronger weave. Twill or oxford weaves work well.

After diligently perusing through seven or eight various shades and fabrics for about a ½ hr, I narrowed it down to four choices. Of the four, I wanted a slim fit so that narrowed down my selection to two designers, Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss. I then had to dig through the stacks of shirts and find the proper shirt size (16 32/33).

I’ve learned the hard way that no two designers measure the same, each with their own sizing quirks. The Calvin Klein felt baggy but it was supposed to be fitted and the Hugo Boss was long on the sleeves, reaching my thumbs. I tried on a shorter sleeved Boss and it still was a little long but the only size they had left. After spending almost two hours looking for one shirt, I was pressed for time and compromised, going with the Boss.

I think the ordeal I’ve just described has probably happened to you as well. We’ve all spent time at a store looking for dress shirts and took the time to make sure it’s the right one, which can become a lengthy process. You may even skip trying it on and just find the size, only to find out later at home it needs to be returned or your stuck with an ill fitted shirt. It’s common for ready made shirts not to fit correctly, each with a unique flaw. Getting shirts tailored is great but that extra cost and time cause a lot of us to think twice.
