A film based on a certain period can inspire a trend. It brings a fresh awareness to a forgotten style, such as Bonnie and Clyde. Contemporary films look at current styles to make sure the “look” is accurately presented, such as Ocean’s Thirteen.

And then, there are films which can start a new fashion altogether. Usually, these films are from the science fiction genre, like 2046. The director creates a new world and those that live in it. The style and clothes are the outcome of his vision and not just a byproduct of the film’s setting.

And finally, there are films that combine a classic look with contemporary tweaks, creating a style that’s almost timeless. A current example would be Christopher Nolan’s brilliant film, Inception. The clothes are modern yet based on the fundamentals, resisting the urge to become dated, something we should do with our own wardrobes. My favorite film among these are The Royal Tenebaums by Wes Anderson. Like his other films, his leanings towards prep reflect the character’s personal style, defining themselves, as the right clothes should do.

A man should have at least one white dress shirt in his closet. It will become a staple for his wardrobe, much like a pair of jeans. This is because it matches any color suit, in any season, at any event. Matching a suit and tie to a white shirt is a breeze, saving time and money. Sometimes, we just have more pressing concerns. Also, you can be bold with the tie since it’s now the centerpiece, the white contrast of your dress shirt serving as a blank canvas. Also, if you want to avoid the sheer, see through look and not wear a white undershirt, then look for something with a stronger weave. Twill or oxford weaves work well.
