Really. Dress shirts are dipped in formaldehyde to remain wrinkle free? Just the thought of this isn’t very comforting, let alone the discomfort of chemical exposure on skin; no one is certain if there are side effects that could emerge, but common sense, to each his own, is enough to wary us. As for proven issues, dress shirts made wrinkle free prevent the fabric from breathing naturally, stifling the wearer. Cotton fibers are to be soft not stiff to the touch.

Imagine, a man buys a new formaldehyde dipped dress shirt to wear. He’s dancing that night and soon profusely sweating. He unbuttons his top and loosens his tie just to let out the steam. All the while, we wonder, what chemical air is he really inhaling? What chemicals have soaked into his skin, his chest? Just food for thought. Don’t let your garment choke the life out of ya!

While the economy has sputtered, these shirts have become immensely popular. They don’t require a trip to the laundry and are generally affordable with poorly designed materials. Cheap and sustainable has become a rallying point in men’s fashion. At the expense of chemically induced dress shirts, more consideration should be given to the subject.

Style and Film | Drive

I’ve seen Ryan Gosling’s new film, Drive, and that elevator scene still rings true. There are plenty of moments that jolted me from my seat, along with testing my patience for a scene to unfold. Regardless, it pays homage to past film noir masterpieces along with a few from the 70’s, with a modern freshness. And Gosling couldn’t be better, sulking along, mumbling lines like Brando used to, a man on the brink.

The film is highly stylized. Glossy L.A. serves as Gosling’s playground, his choice in cars reflecting American muscle while his clothes hark back to the 70’s, all function no waste. We found a terrific review on the film that digs deeper into the connection of the star’s look and the psychology behind it.

David Lynch is one of my favorite film directors. Although Dune was a mistake on a commercial level, it won’t diminish his accomplishments for Blue Velvet, Mullholland Drive and the breakthrough television series, Twin Peaks, among others. He also has a fine talent in casting female leads.

J. Crew’s Thomas Mason Dress Shirt | Best Seller But Not the Best Choice

J. Crew has come a long way in a short amount of time. They’ve taken the basics and raised their level of quality, producing authentic styles while also collaborating with other designers to make something better.

Working with other designers sometimes detracts from a brand’s value, needing the “help” of another brand to raise their own. That isn’t the case with J. Crew. Their collaborations have been successful, especially their best selling dress shirt, the Thomas Mason white dress shirt.

We found a good read on why its been so successful, though, at $135, it makes us scratch our heads. While there’s no denying the quality of a Thomas Mason dress shirt, why not have it custom tailored at the same price point? It’s still off the rack and therefore won’t fit perfectly.

The Other Aviator Sunglasses | Pilot Aviators

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Meaning, I dig the sunglasses worn by Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now. They’re military issued and look great on anyone, especially someone like myself, with the hard angled frames giving an edge to an oval shaped face.

They also look good on Travis Bickle.

And on everyone’s favorite ad man, Don Draper.

Teardrop aviators are a dime a dozen but the pilot’s are mostly forgotten. You won’t run into many people wearing them. And if you do, that means they appreciate excellent films and good style.

The originals are made by Randolph Engineering at a little over $100. Or you can get something very similar at half the price by American Optical.

Sunglasses are a long running staple as an accessory and for good reason. It frames our most important feature. And during the dog days of Summer or a frigid morning in December, protecting ourselves from the glare of mother nature is a year round obligation.
